The 27th Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF) is in full swing, and recently had a second showing of the new Indonesian musical, “Three Sassy Sisters.” Major players in the world of Indonesian cinema gathered at the Shaw Lido Theatre to have a chance to watch this strong piece. The film’s director, Nia Dinata, and starring actors, Tara Basro, Reuben Elishama, Richard Kyle, and Titek Puspa, were all the center of attention.
“Three Sassy Sisters” is a catchy musical, which honors the 1956 classic, “Tiga Dara.” Dinata uses this film to take a look at how modern women can change their roles from ordinary housewives, to career-oriented workingwomen. Dinata has been a powerhouse director for quite some time, with other work such as “The Courtesan” and “Love for Share” receiving Academy Award nominations for best foreign film.
The SGIFF began on November 23, 2016 and will run until December 4, 2016 across a variety of different venues including: Marina Bay Sands, Capitol Theatre, National Museum of Singapore Gallery Theatre, and the National Gallery Singapore Auditorium.

Special Presentation Film, Three Sassy Sisters, Premieres at the 27th Singapore International Film Festival, Shaw Lido
Singapore, 28 November 2016 – Indonesia’s finest gathered on the red carpet for the Singapore premiere of musical film, Three Sassy Sisters, at Shaw Lido Theatre earlier this evening. Basking in the limelight were Indonesian stars, Tara Basro, Reuben Elishama, Richard Kyle, Titek Puspa, and director, Nia Dinata, who were in town to attend the screening of the second Special Presentation film at the 27th Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF).
Dinata’s latest film stint, Three Sassy Sisters, pays homage and puts a modern twist to the 1956 musical classic, Tiga Dara. Featuring catchy musical numbers, the film reimagines the lead characters from housewives into career-oriented professionals, as it highlights their strengths and individuality as modern women within the confines of traditional family values. Dinata’s previous films, The Courtesan (2002) and Love for Share (2006) had been previously submitted to the Academy Awards under the Best Foreign Language Film category.
The 27th edition of SGIFF, which runs from 23 November to 4 December 2016, will take place across various venues, including Marina Bay Sands, Capitol Theatre, National Museum of Singapore Gallery Theatre, Shaw Theatres Lido, National Gallery Singapore Auditorium, The Arts House Screening Room, Filmgarde Bugis+ and Objectifs Chapel Gallery.
